The federal government offered to reimburse half of the costs of a special interdecennial census to ant state or territory that agreed to accept the offer. Dakota Territory was one of the five territories or states that elected to participate. The special census was conducted in the summer of 1885.
More than 99% of the 1890 Federal Census of the United States was destroyed in a 1921 fire. All of the 1890 Federal Census of North Dakota was destroyed and the only surviving schedule (a fragment) of the 1890 Federal Census of South Dakota was for Jefferson Township, Union County, South Dakota.
Most of a special census enumerating the veterans of the Civil War and the widows of these veterans survived the fire. The complete schedules for North and South Dakota are available.
